Tektites are unique, glassy objects formed by the impact of large meteorites or asteroids with the Earth's surface. They are a type of impactite, which is a category of rocks and minerals formed by the intense heat and pressure generated during meteorite impacts. Tektites are distinct from typical terrestrial rocks and minerals, and they exhibit the following characteristics:

    • Glassy Texture: Tektites have a glassy or vitreous texture, which means they appear similar to natural glass. This glassiness is a result of the rapid cooling of molten material ejected during the impact event.

    • Unusual Shapes: Tektites come in a variety of shapes, including spherical, teardrop, button-like, and irregular forms. These shapes are often aerodynamic, reflecting the way they were ejected from the impact site.

    • Various Colors: Tektites can be found in various colors, including black, dark brown, green, and gray. The coloration is due to the composition of the impacting meteorite or asteroid and the geological conditions at the impact site.

    • High Silica Content: Tektites are primarily composed of silica (silicon dioxide), similar to natural glass. This composition distinguishes them from other impact-related rocks, such as shatter cones or impact breccias, which are typically composed of crushed and fragmented rocks.

    • No Crystalline Structure: Unlike minerals and rocks that have a crystalline structure, tektites lack a distinct internal arrangement of atoms. Instead, they have an amorphous or non-crystalline structure.

    • Strewn Fields: Tektites are often found in scattered areas called strewn fields, which can be quite extensive. These strewn fields are associated with specific impact events and can provide valuable information about the origin and trajectory of the impacting object.

Tektites are often named according to their geographic locations, and some well-known tektite types include Moldavites (from the Czech Republic), Indochinites (from Southeast Asia), Australites (from Australia), and Libyan Desert Glass (from the Libyan Desert). The age of tektites can be determined through radiometric dating, helping scientists establish the timing of past impact events.
